What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?
A typical day usually involves writing code to implement improvements and bug fixes. Most recently, I’ve been working on WorkfloPlus and building customised reports for clients.
What is on your wish list for your next five years here?
As I’m fairly new to software engineering, I’d like to keep learning new technical skills and further develop my programming by getting involved with different projects. I’d also like to see WorkfloPlus continue to grow and improve.
What kind of skills do you need to be effective in your role?
Aside from programming skills, I’d say it’s important to have a creative and analytical approach to problem solving to help find the source of issues and then think of the best way to go about solving them. It’s also good to be patient and persistent with trying out different solutions to find an approach that works. Another key skill is communication because it’s important to fully understand what the requirements of a project are and to be able to discuss things with both other developers and non-technical colleagues in other teams.
What do you like most about your job?
I really enjoy the problem solving aspect of my job because I like figuring out how things work and then applying solutions to fix or improve them.
What’s your most memorable facepalm moment?
When I was very new at Intoware, I spent a silly amount of time trying to work out why some code I’d written wasn’t working when it really should’ve been. Turns out I had misspelt the word ‘workflow’ as ‘worfklow’ in my code. It worked perfectly once I figured that out!
We have a tradition of having a joke of the week during our team catch up. In honour of this can you give us your favourite joke?
To the person who stole my copy of Microsoft Office, I will find you. You have my Word.
What’s your favourite line from a film?
“Do or do not. There is no try.” - Yoda, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Finally, who would you like to highlight from the next issue's “Meet The Team” segment?
Fellow newbie, Nick Hope
